"Lack of formal attention to our indigenous languages is currently endangering our language culture, which is on the road to death," a university professor has warned.
Prof. John Illah, who made this revelation during the International Museum day held in Abuja, Friday, disclosed further that the disconnection from our heritage has given rise to identity crises in the younger generation where English language is now the language spoken daily thereby cutting them off from their mother tongue.
He said "the Nigerian constitution recognizes English language as supreme and acceptance of whatever comes from outside no matter how flawed to the detriment of indigenous patterns, has flawed our culture."
The theme of the celebration tagged "Universal Hertiage, the right of ownership" is the second edition by the arts and culture secretariat.
Also, a book titled "Socio-cultural study of the people of Abuja," volume 2 was presented to the public.
Prof Illah who doubled as guest speaker said our mindset in Nigeria pushes us to discredit and renounce where we are coming from.
Some of problems he said with our museums is low state of funding, he stressed that cash backing has been difficult for projects like the proposed Unity Museum in Abuja.
He stated that students only choose archaeology when they have no other choice or having rejected from other more popular, less cumbersome courses.
Part of the lecturer's recommendation to the public was building a passion of nostalgia for the past by building heritage studies into our formal and non-formal curriculum, improving the climate of legislation, private sector partnership and general support the festival of arts.
Meanwhile, the secretary to the secretariat, Amina Bala Zakari in her welcome remarks said there is a need for awareness to preserve our culture.
She said "we need to document our original culture because as development improves so our heritage decreases so a more active role is required".
The book presented was reviewed by Dr Joseph Ukwede of the history department of the University of Abuja, who encouraged everyone to get a copy and read.
Among the dignitaries who attended the occasion were chief of Garki, Alhaji Usman Ngakupi who represented the Ona of Abaji.
