Nigeria: Implement Building Materials Policy

28 May 2007

Lagos — IN his own contribution, the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Arc. Enyi Ben-Eboh, enjoined the in-coming government to come up with a Building Materials Policy. Such a policy, according to Arc. Ben-Eboh should ensure that building materials used in the country have more local content. The Lagos NIA chairman who decried the massive importation of building materials into the country, charged the new government to step up research activities into the plethora of locally available building materials in the country.

Arc. Ben-Eboh whose comments tallied with the views expressed by the NSE President, canvassed what he called "serious reforms in the construction industry such that square pegs will be found in square holes". Arc. Ben-Eboh lamented that it is only in Nigeria that unqualified persons are given jobs that are meant for experts. He enjoined the incoming administration to ensure that only qualified personnel are patronised.
