Nigeria: Lamido's Carrot to Beggars

Lagos — ALHAJI Sule Lamido, the new Governor of Jigawa State, has unfolded a new welfare package aimed at ridding the State of beggars. Apart from a monthly allowance of N7,000, he promised to give training to any of the beggars who desire to acquire skills in any chosen profession.

These options are not voluntary as the order will be backed by a coming legislation that would provide sanctions for breaches. When the law comes into force, any beggar "if arrested, would be punished in line with the new law."
