South Africa: Health Minister Warns Private Hospitals

Cape Town — On her second day back in Parliament after her liver transplant, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang went on the attack yesterday, taking aim at private hospitals and promising legislation to address inequities between private and public health care.

The minister also thumbed her nose at critics who decried her department's display at the Toronto International Aids Conference last year. She was criticised at the time for emphasising fruit and vegetables rather than medication in the fight against HIV/Aids. The department's display in the lobby of Parliament yesterday was dominated by a mountain of fruit and vegetables.
