Nairobi — The year was 1995 and I was one very happy teenager as we watched the great pulsating sensation of the time, Five Alive, rock the Hard-rock CafÈ at Barclays Plaza in Nairobi. Kids were shouting the white roof of the plush and classy neon-ad dÈcor of the cafe down: "Five alive, five alive " they chanted.
The quintet, comprising Eric Wainaina, Victor Seii, Chris Kamau, Joe Kiragu and Bob Kioko were, at the time, a handful of only two handfuls of local celebrity musicians in the entire country - and just three years before, there had not been even that.
