Pretoria — Government has unveiled a web site www.sa2010.gov.za <http://www.sa2010.gov.za/> , which aims to provide information on government's preparations for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.
The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said the website provided information about the country and the continent in the context of the first African World Cup.
"This is one of government's initiatives to take advantage of the 2010 Fifa World Cup communication opportunity for the benefit of the country and continent," said the GCIS in a statement.
It further provides an entry point to other sources of information about the country - such as the South African Tourism and International Marketing Council gateway, provincial and host city websites.
The site is complementary to the web site of Fifa www.fifa.com <http://www.fifa.com/> and the Local Organising Committee, and was conceived in consultation with the world football governing body.
A strong element of the site will be to provide comprehensive information on government 2010-related programmes, including those related to economic opportunities.
In addition, the site will also provide information about the country, as millions of people will focus on South Africa in the run-up to the tournament.
South Africa has committed to being Africa's stage, and to making the world cup part of a 21st century of African growth and development.
The right to host the 2010 World Cup brings South Africa an opportunity that is about much more than football.
The world Cup is the opportunity of a lifetime to change negative perceptions about the continent, provide long-lasting infrastructure beyond the games, grow economies and tourism as well as benefit the region and Africa as a whole.
