Kampala — The management of a Chinese agricultural machinery factory has promised to set up a multi-purpose walking tractor assembly plant in Uganda.
The Chinese Ambassador, Fan Guijin, recently said the Ms. Anhui Changjiang Agricultural Machinery Company Ltd that produces walking tractors was determined to enter into trade and economic cooperation with Uganda.
Guijin told farmers at Doho Rice Scheme that the rehabilitation of the scheme and improvement of the farming skills could only be done through commercial cooperation with firms in China.
He said the walking tractor could be used for power generation, ploughing, weeding, irrigation and transportation of produce from the gardens to the mills.
He said China was committed to the promotion of development in Uganda. "I cannot give you any specific promise. But I can assure you that we will do more for this country," Guijin said.
The officials from the company assembled and exhibited one of the walking tractors that one of them tested out for the public during Butaleja district Women's Day celebrations at the district headquarters recently.
The tractor was handed over to the district officials for use by the farmers at Doho Rice Scheme.
