The president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, Mr Graeme Mew, has praised Kenya's strong democratic foundation.Mew said Kenya could be compared to first world countries in terms of the way political issues were discussed.

"I see Kenya as a country with a robust democracy, judging by the content of the media, which shows that politics is discussed freely. Kenya is fundamentally a democratic society," said Mew.

Speaking at a news conference in Nairobi on Wednesday, he said allegations of corruption were many, but the fact that they were being talked about freely points to a strong democratic foundation.

Mew is in the country for the preparation of the 15th Commonwealth Law Conference to be held in Nairobi in September.

President Kibaki has been invited to officially open the conference that will bring together more than 1,500 lawyers and their spouses on September 9.

Mew said the conference would not shy away from discussing controversial issues like graft in the Government.

The conference will have top judges and lawyers from the commonwealth countries exchanging ideas.

Some of the subjects to be discussed include human rights, governance and the rule of law, law in a globalised economy and contemporary legal topics.
