Nigeria: Election in the House of God - How Archbishop Onaiyekan Beat Primate Akinola

Abuja — TUESDAY, June 19, 2007 may have come and gone, but the memories of an event that took place on the day will ever remain fresh in the minds of the Catholic faithful. Every day, men wake up with dreams, to face the challenges and bustle of life. In fact, it could be well described as a red-letter day in the history of Catholicism in Nigeria. It was the day the five blocs which make up the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) elected a new president.

The blocs are the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) and the Evangelical Fellowship of West Africa (ECWA). Two great Nigerians in the Christian fold apparently offered to lead the umbrella group for Christians in the country. There was no compromise candidate. Hence the resort to election to choose the new CAN president.
