Liberia: AU Summit Takes Off

Monrovia — President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has participated in the opening session of the 9th Summit of African Union Heads of State and Government being held in at Ghana's Accra International Conference Center. The Summit brought together a large gathering of the continent's political leaders with most African Presidents in attendance.

Addressing today's opening session the Chairperson of the African Union, Professor Alpha Omar Konare, characterized the day as a special one for Ghana and Africa. He paid homage to Former Ghanaian President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for initiating the idea, saying that a unified Africa is what he wished for before his death. Professor Konare emphasized that from 1999 to present; many things have been achieved, mentioning the African Court of Justice as a case in point. He also called for the strengthening of sub-regional commissions as well as the elimination of any obstacle which would impede this objective.
