Nigeria: The Texture of Agbakoba's Activism

opinion

Lagos — OLISA Agbakoba's strenuous claim to radicalism and prime spot in the arena of political activism has always appeared less than convincing. Somehow, interestingly, in spite of his gratuitous aggressiveness, both the man and his views never manage to come across before the public as profound and genuinely selfless. And they never are, really. Give it to him though; Olisa Agbakoba works quite hard in the pursuit of the goal of forcing himself on public consciousness as an activist. And he has done quite well; it must be admitted, in selling himself.

In the days since he got elected to the office of president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba has moved on with characteristic self-serving aggressiveness, consistently substituting his views and interests here and now with those of the NBA. Under his presidency of the NBA, there does not seem to exist any distinction between the views, the pursuits and the idiosyncrasies of one man and the policies of a well established professional body as the NBA.
