Nigeria: Afikuyomi Fails to Appear for Commisioners' Screening

Lagos — Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday concluded the screening of commissioner nominees mearnt to serve in the cabinet of governor Raji Fashola, as Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi failed to appear before the lawmakers. A letter read at the floor of the House by the Speaker of the House, Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji said Senator Afikuyomi was absent because he was on offiocial assignment given to him by Fashola.

However, the introduction of Mr Ademorin Aliyu Kuye, who was formerly nominated to the House as Special Adviser and later as commissioner nominee through a letter written to the House by the state governor and read on the floor House by the clerk of the House, Mr Taiwo Olatunji took the lawmakers by surprise

While the exercise was going on it was discovered that the nominee did possess tax clearance certificate, and the House ordered him to explain why the tax clearance certificate was not included. The House, however, alleged that he was involved in a protest over his nomination for the position of Special Adviser, while responding, Kuye denied being involved in the protest in Somolu last week were some people were wounded and properties destroyed, but in the course of his explanation , he did say a general he need not to take to street protest , just as he claimed he has tax clearance certificate , but it was not with him at the floor of the House .

When drilling was at heat some of the lawmakers tried to make case for him, Hon. SOB Agubiade from Ikorodu said he should pardon and all his actions would investigated.

Shortly after the intervention of some lawmakers he was cleared by the House with a promise of bring the tax clearance certificate latter.

Expressing contrary view ,the House Majority leader Hon Kolawole Taiwo and the Deputy speaker Hon Adefunmilayo Tejuosho insisted that all matters must be brought to the bear because that was the purpose of screening nominees .

According to Hon Taiwo "demonstration because of a position is a dangerous trend ,it is a trend that can destabilize the peace of Lagos state and can make our administration vulnerable."

Speaking in the same vein Hon Tejuosho said the House should not sweep any matter under the carpet" it is necessary to bring out all issues which can affect government of the state , for one to function as an official or commissioner in the state ,apart from his academic qualification he must possess good public relation and integrity,we woun't like a situation that may usurp the progress of this state ."

In the light of the submission of the lawmakers the House urged the nominee to leave , and that a decision shall be taken on his matter latter.

Kuye problem was compounded as he was noticed to be shewing something in his mouth which the lawmakers suspected could be a charm to scurry the favour of the lawmakers,but he denied it and that he was trying to use his tongue to remove remnant of food that stuck in his gum.

Nominees who participated in yesterday screening inlude mr Enoch Ajiboso, Hon. Joke Adefulore, Prof. Bamidele Badejo, Dr. Jide Idris Supo Sasore, Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele, Mr. Ben Akabueze.
