Tension continues to characterise relations between the Chief of Lerala, Sello Moroka, and the Village Development Committee of his village.

Kgosi Moroka says the VDC has not accounted for over P9 000. The VDC says the amount is a miniscule P1 431, which the chief used to install an airconditioner.

The two have been at loggerheads over alleged maladministration of funds by the VDC, which saw the chief objecting to the election of a new committee on February 27 last year.

To-date, certain development projects are run by a VDC whose mandate expired in August 2005.

The chief objected to the election of a new committee last year because the existing VDC had a deficit of P9 318.14. Kgosi Moroka wanted an investigation into the 'missing funds' and culprits brought to book before any election could take place.

But the chief, still in February last year, also wrote a letter to the local council requesting it to suspend the VDC and to withhold financial books from its members. There has been little feedback since.

Lerala VDC chairman Gabapelo Lebogang has confirmed that they had serious problems with Chief Moroka and that the chief has 'toned down' his support for the committee and even influenced the village's headmen to do the same.

Lebogang says the problem dates back to 2004: "The chief never consults us on whatever he wants to do; he stamps his authority."
