The Combined Harare Residents' Association has officially requested the European Union to place nine Harare commissioners on the travel ban list, alongside Zanu PF heavyweights.
In a letter to the European Commission office in Harare, CHRA's acting chairperson Israel Mabhoo urged the EU to apply travel restrictions to Sekesai Makwavara the chairperson, and eight other members of the commission who are held partly responsible for ruining the once prosperous city.
CHRA information officer Precious Shumba told Newsreel the request to have the commissioners banned from traveling to western capitals was an important first step in their determination to see them out of office.
'Makwavara travels abroad quite frequently and all she has come back with are more clothes, jewellery and curtains for her house. She has led an extravagant life that has not benefited the residents of Harare,' Shumba said.
Other members of the commission that CHRA want to see banned from travel are Professor Jameson Kurasha a University of Zimbabwe lecturer, Sasha Jogi President of the Institute of Urban Planners, Alfred Tome District Administrator for Harare, Musavaya Reza a Provincial Administrator for Harare, Killian Mupingo a deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Richard Mahachi an architect in private practice, Sylvia Masango principal director in the office of Vice President Joyce Mujuru, and Madzudzo Pawadyira the director of the Civil Protection Unit.
Shumba said they will wait for the EU to deliberate on the issue and hope that they get a favourable response. The letter highlights the six High court judgements that ruled that the commission was illegal and that most of the commissioners were enriching themselves from council deals.
'The letter which was delivered and accepted by the office of the Delegation of the European Commission in Harare on Monday will also be delivered to the ambassadors of the United States of America, Australia, and New Zealand urging them to apply travel restrictions,' said CHRA in a statement.
