Nigeria: Failure of National Housing Programme Worries Jakande

Lagos — Former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, yesterday told a Federal High Court in Lagos, that he was surprised that 11 years after Nigerians deposited money for the National Housing Programme (NHP), no contributor has been given a house.

Testifying at the resumed hearing in the suit by Nigerians who deposited various sums of money under the project, and sued the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), over government failure to deliver the houses as promised, Jakande said 121,000 houses were planned under the project. Jakande, who as Minister for Works and Housing between 1993 and 95, was the initiator of the programme, and also the crown witness of the depositors. He said he wondered why depositors have not been given either their houses or their money refunded, after all these years.
