Harare — THE 2007 Zimbabwe International Book Fair will open in Harare with an Indaba on July 31 and runs until August 4.
The fair, whose theme is "Transforming Lives Through Literature", will be held in the Harare Gardens, with most of the conferences being held at the Monomotapa Crowne Plaza Hotel.
The Indaba will be officially opened by the Secretary for Education, Sport and Culture, Dr Steven Mahere, with Dr Robert McLaren of Chipawo giving a keynote address on the theme.
The morning session of the Indaba will have topics such as The Writer and Social Responsibility, The Writer and Copyright Issues in Zimbabwe, Censorship of Writers: A Blessing or an Evil and Freedom of Association and Authorship.
In the afternoon, topics such as Publishers and Social Transformation as well as Literature and Social Cultural Diversity will be discussed.
On August 1 a writers, publishers and librarians' workshop will start and to be discussed are topics such as Writers: Challenges and Opportunities and Literary Criticism and Social Transformation taking up the whole morning session.
Later on the day, the focus will be on the role of libraries in transforming lives and literature and transformation of gender relations. New this year is the Young Persons Indaba where the importance of Freedom of Association in transformative authorship and the role of young persons in transforming lives through literature will be discussed.
In the afternoon, the discussion will be on issues to be considered in authorship with a difference and building the talent for tomorrow's literature: proposed strategies from a young person's view.
Exhibitors will also set up their stalls on the same day.
