Lagos — The Nigeria Computer Society NCS has announced that its 2007 annual conference will take place from Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 July 2007 at Imo Concorde Hotel, Owerri.
A press statement made available to THISDAY stated that the theme of the conference is "Achieving the millennium Development Goals in Nigeria: IT Strategies and tools". The UN's eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is an economic and social blueprint, agreed to by all the nations of the world as well as the world's leading development institutions, for galvanizing efforts aimed at meeting the needs of the poor and deprived countries of the world. It is believed that if effort is sustained across the world along the strategies recommended the objectives of the MDGs which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, will be met by 2015.
Nigeria is part of this global understanding and, the Nigeria Computer Society will, during this conference, highlight the issues involved and will dwell on the need to identify relevant and cost-effective IT strategies, tools and infrastructures required to achieve poverty reduction in Nigeria by the target year of 2015, in compliance with the MDGs.
The conference will feature experts from within and outside the country and will discuss issues of job creation using IT, Empowering Women using IT, Enabling Technologies for Wealth Creation, Public, Private Initiatives in Emerging Technologies, Biomedical and Health Informatics, GIS and Environmental Sustainability, etc.
Other highlights of the conference include Exhibition of hardware and software products, Fellows' Breakfast, Excursions, Induction of new members, Cultural Night as well as the Society's AGM.
The Chief Host of the conference is the Executive Governor of Imo State Chief Ikedi Ohakim. Other Governors from the southeast are also expected at the event.
The chairman of the Opening Ceremony is Anyim Pius Anyim, a distinguished Senator and former President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.The keynote address at the Opening Ceremony will be presented by Prof C.O.E Onwuliri, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri while Chief Ozichukwu Chukwu, National Vice-Chairman of PDP Southeast will feature at the Fellows' Breakfast.
A number of distinguished Nigerians will be honored at the closing banquet of the conference.
