Sudan: Five Darfur Opposition Groups Form United Front

14 July 2007

Asmara — Following a month and half long meetings in Asmara at the invitation of Eritrea and the initiative of Libya and Chad, five Darfur opposition groups have formed a United Front for Liberation and Development (UFLD).

In a joint communiqué they issued today, the group said that they formed the united front so as to meet the challenges in Darfur and Sudan in general. They further called on other groups to follow and support this move.

Stating that the people of Darfur are capable and willing to foster unity on their own initiative and desire, the group pointed out that the establishment of the untied front represents first strategic victory and that they have embarked on resolving the Darfur issue and that of Sudan in general on the basis of clear vision.

Moreover, they called on all Sudanese political forces and associations to rally behind the Darfur people and their rights. The group further called on the United Nations and the African Union, as well as other parties in the international community to support the initiative they had taken.

The group also commended the people and Government of Eritrea under the leadership of President Isaias Afwerki for the unremitting efforts they have been making and continue to make towards promoting a peaceful settlement of the Darfur issue.
