Malawi: Acknowledging Challenges

16 July 2007

editorial

Lilongwe — Being prepared for any battle in advance means you have won half the war. Many mighty armies have fallen simply because the enemy has had information about their war strategies in advance and made plans to counter the plans. A seemingly smaller army is able to withstand the onslaught of a bigger and stronger army with very minimal loss of soldiers because they have information and are prepared to engage fully in the battle.

Bravo!! The Ministry of Health and the National TB Control Programme are doing just that in making sure that there are strategies in place to handle the possible emergence of Extensively Drug Resistant-TB (XDR-TB) in Malawi. Acknowledging that there is potential that XDR-TB could surface in this country because of the high prevalence rate of HIV is indeed mature and realistic.

Putting plans in place to deal with any such development is commendable, but what is even more forward-looking is the fact that all is being done to stop any XDR-TB developing in the country.

The saying that "Prevention is better than cure" could not be more true in this instance.

Once upon a time, over 25 years ago, we refused to acknowledge that there were people in our nation who had been infected with HIV. The results of that denial are still being felt today.

XDR-TB surfacing in Malawi must remain a possibility but never become a reality. It can be so if we make the fight personal and work with the professionals who are doing their best to keep the disease in check
