Accra — Stella Ampah has been arrested by the police for dumping her eleven day-old baby into a refuse container at Shaibu Dansoman, a suburb of Accra.
The baby was found lying in a refuse container with bruises all over the body and crying. The Public Affairs officer of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, (DVVSU) Inspector Irene Oppong, told Public Agenda that the complainant carried the baby to her house and thereafter to the Dansoman Clinic where she was given first aid.
The baby was referred to the Police Hospital for further treatment. Inspector Irene said investigation led to the arrest of first and second suspects namely Stella Ampah and Agyemang Prince Duodu, parents of the baby.
In her caution statement, Stella told the police that Agyemang was her husband who had denied her and the baby shelter, food and financial support which led to her dumping the baby into the refuse container.
On May 5, 2007, the baby died while on admission at the Police Hospital. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the baby's death.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Oppong, a driver's mate has been remanded in policy custody for indecently assaulting a nine-year-old pupil.
The victim lives with her parents at Pokuase near Accra in the same house with the accused. Inspector Irene Oppong of DVVSU said during the latter part of March 2007, the victim went to ease herself at a pit latrine which is fenced with wooden boards behind their house.
While there, Kennedy suddenly opened the door, entered and locked it behind him. Victim then pleaded with the accused to go out and wait since she had not finished.
Kennedy ignored her and stood by. When victim attempted to go out, Kennedy held her, put her on the wooden floor and attempted to have sexual intercourse with her.
However, he could not gain penetration. After that Kennedy inserted his fingers into the victim's vagina and indecently assaulted her. Accused then warned her not to disclose the act to anybody else she will die.
On May 1, 2007, the victim could not walk as a result of pain. She informed her parents and a report was made to the police. Kennedy was arrested and the victim sent to hospital for treatment.
