Mauritius: Open Day at Sainte-Marie

Port Louis — Sainte Marie College is organising its first Open Day next Thursday. After three years, the rector of this fee-paying catholic school, Janine Provençal, thought it was time to show parents what their children have achieved at school. "It is also an opportunity for all other parents to see the way Sainte Marie works. We hope this special day will be like a showcase of our activities."

Thanks to invitations sent to a number of primary schools and adverts in newspapers over the past few days, the rector hopes to welcome the parents of the 100 pupils as well as about a hundred parents more.

Sainte Marie has admitted 40 new pupils every year so far but Janine Provençal has made it clear that the school has the capacity of welcoming a greater number. This should encourage parents to come on Thursday, the more so as "there has been a growing interest for Sainte Marie".

According to the rector, this interest may be due to the "discipline prevailing at Sainte Marie, as it is an important value in education". The numerous activities that are organised for pupils also appear as strengths of the education provided by Sainte Marie.

Outings, outdoor activities, talks on aids, drugs and alcohol are some of the value-added activities of the school. "We don't rely only on lectures in classrooms. Such activities are a priority for us, as they contribute a lot to the child's development," Janine Provençal insists. The small number of pupils at Sainte Marie allows such activities to take place and a special relationship to build up between the "dynamic staff" and the pupils.
