Uganda: Policeman Arrested Over Murder

Kayunga — THE hunter has become the hunted. Police in Kayunga are holding a local administration police constable on allegations of murder. District CID chief Grant Tabo said on Saturday Robert Ssemwanga, 34, attached to Busaana local administration police allegedly shot dead Bernard Kitakule, 24, a resident of Namukuma village for refusing to obey lawful orders.

Mr Tabo said on Friday evening, Mr Ssemwanga was deployed to arrest a group of idle and disorderly youth in Busaana trading centre. "When he reached the scene where about six youth were gambling, he asked all of them to lie down but Mr Kitakule refused and he shot him in the head several times," he said.

Mr Tabo said irate residents tried to lynch Mr Ssemwanga but he escaped from the mob and reported to police. "We arrested him. There is no proof that the deceased was trying to disarm or to turn against him to warrant the shooting in self defence," he said.
