Osogbo — In the face of the nation's population growth with its attendant social problems, a federal commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) Dr. Duro Famojuro, has predicted a population explosion in the next 20 years.

Famojuro in a chat with THISDAY in Osogbo, also observed that if Nigerians comprehensively addressed the National Policy on Population, it would help in sustainable development.

The commissioner, who pointed out that a nation's population was the most important asset in its quest for development, cautioned that "We have to watch the rate at which we are going otherwise it may lead to total population explosion".

He maintained that adequate measure with provision of accurate and reliable data for the pragmatic implementation of population activities will help to curb the situation in Nigeria .

Famojuro further observed that the available resources in the country were not commensurate with the rate at which the country's population is growing.

He however cautioned that adequate steps should be taken to avoid unnecessary population explosion for the sake of the yet unborn generation.
