Sierra Leone: CGG Begins Salone Governance Assessment

23 July 2007

Freetown — The Campaign for Good Governance has started research on Sierra Leone Governance and Assessment and administered 100 questionnaires to participants yesterday at an expert panel study.

Giving a brief background of the project, Head of Programme, Marcella Macauley said the research project is part of the United Nations Economic Commission for West Africa's broad initiative of measuring and monitoring progress towards good governance in Africa (UNECA).

"We are using UNECA designed research instruments for monitoring good governance," she said, adding that the overall objective is to encourage and promote improved governance in the continent.

Macauley said the assessments are meant to achieve good governance through setting branch works as well as assessing progress and publicizing progress in African countries.

She said the findings will also identify capacity gaps and propose initiatives for capacity building interventions in those aspects of governance found wanting.

The project is comprised of national country studies.

"CGG is tasked with undertaking the Sierra Leone study and is expected to draft a national report based on the results of research," Macauley stated.

She said the research instrument has been coded as C1, C2, and C3. C1 is the expert panel study, C2 is used in a nation-wide household probability sample survey and C3 will serve as the basis for desk research.

At present CGG exists to increase citizen's participation in governance through advocacy, capacity building and civil education in order to build a more informed civil populace and a democratic state.

The in-country studies prescription report for West Africa will be out in 2008 and the Sierra Leone report will be out this September.
