Mauritius: What you should know ?

23 July 2007

Port Louis —  What was the aim of the visit of the prime minister in China ? What was the aim of the visit of the prime minister in China ?

The PM, Navin Ramgoolam, went to China with minister Sithanen and a delegation of businessmen to boost the image of Mauritius with the Chinese government. This visit occurred at a time when the Mauritian Government is betting on the finalisation of the Tianli project. This would be the signal of the extent of investment the country wants to attract.

How did the government obtain the support of the Chinese government?

Navin Ramgoolam and Rama Sithanen went to China following a big preparation deriving from the two last budgets of the government. The government has opened the economy to attract foreign investors. For this, it has set up several measures such as bringing the corporate tax to 15%. The opening of the economy has also been symbolised by an ongoing campaign of the Board of Investment, which has undertaken a vast campaign to promote the image of Mauritius as a country that qualifies for direct foreign investment. Tianli is the first result of this promotion campaign.

What are the final outcomes of this state visit?

Ramgoolam's and Sithanen's visit to China seems to have been fruitful as the country has obtained a Rs 3.5 billions credit from the Chinese government. Then, they have been able to elaborate on the wishes to attract major foreign investment and have finalised the project Tianli, which has marked a new stage in the cooperation between Mauritius and China.
