Harare — MKWASINE High School are the new champions of the M and H Educational Supplies National Under-17 Secondary Schools Trophy after winning the 11th edition of the tournament in Hwange on Saturday.
The school made sure the championship remained in Masvingo Province when they downed St Francis of Assisi from Mashonaland East 2-0 in the final at Lwendulu Old Ground.
Two well-executed penalty kicks by midfielder Addlight Rupuwu in the 7th and 25th minute earned Mkwasine the trophy.
On their way to the final, Mkwasine had dumped defending champions Pamushana High Schoo 4-3 on penalties in the semi-final.
Pamushana's defeat left the entire team in tears as they were gunning for a third successive M and H title.
St Francis of Assisi sweated in their 1-0 victory over Prince Edward of Harare in the other semi-final at the Sports Pavilion Ground.
For their efforts, Mkwasine pocketed $10 million dollars plus a kit of last year's Cup Winners' colours Mwana Africa while St Francis of Assisi went home $8 million richer and a kit in defending league champions Highlanders colours.
Other finalists who fell by the wayside in the preliminary rounds are Sakubva (Manicaland); Mzingwane High (Matabeleland South); Loreto High (Midlands), Luveve High (Bulawayo), Kutama College (Mashonaland West), Mazoe Boys High (Mashonaland Central), Binga High School and Hwange Government, who could not utilize home advantage.
Binga High school goalkeeper Ishmael Mudimba won the best goalkeepers' award while Lloyd Chikurumani's five goals saw him winning the top striker award.
Mwenezi's Hugh Maparera was the outstanding player at the tournament.
The tournament, which gave coaches from established clubs a chance to scout for talent, was sponsored to the tune of $400 million by Harare businessman Alex Mashamhanda.
