Mauritius: Another way of educating

Port Louis — Sainte-Marie's open day, held last Thursday, was up to the school's expectations. The 120 pupils were happy to show to their parents and other visitors what they had done since the beginning of the year.

As the school, headed by Janine Provençal, wants to be more than a place where pupils are just given academic instruction, the exhibition not only showed the pupils' academic achievements but it also highlighted their artistic and technical works.

"Parents were open-mouthed in front of the work done by their children," said the school staff. The department of Home Economics showed the lasagne, scones and pancakes done by pupils themselves as well as their sewing work. The pupils of the Arts department exhibited their paintings and sculptures while those of the design field were able to show the models and projects done since the beginning of the year.

Even the academic departments found a way of making the exhibition fun. For French, pupils of Form III presented a small play. The English department had set the table for a typical English breakfast.

In fact, this Open Day was an opportunity of showing the special spirit that prevails at Sainte-Marie since it opened in 2005. The school's aim is to educate the child - and not only to give him or her instruction. The all-round development of the child is the top priority of the school, which organises meaningful activities to reach its objectives.

The Environment Club is one of the initiatives aimed at developing awareness for the world around these pupils and opening their minds outside their confined environment of school or home. The fact that the school accommodates both boys and girls is another way of opening their horizons and teaching them to live in society.

Sainte-Marie follows the same curriculum as other schools under the aegis of the Bureau of Catholic Education. However, since it is a fee-paying school, it has some liberty that other schools may not have like some extra-curricular activities, for instance.

The open day last Thursday was also an opportunity for visitors to come and see what Sainte Marie could offer. Many of them came to have some information on the school.
