Botswana: Baby Dumped in Pit Latrine in Khekhenye

Takatokwane Police are investigating a case in which a newly born baby was found dumped in pit latrine at Khekhenye settlement last month.

According to Assistant Station Commander, Inspector Michael Mooketsi Mosothwane, the police received a report from the Kang police that there was a newly born dumped in a pit latrine. He said they went to Khekhenye where they found the dumped baby. They took the baby to Scottish Hospital in Molepolole where it was certified dead on arrival.

"The baby was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. This is the first incident in that area. Even though there are similar incidents in the Letlhakeng Sub- district, Khekhenye is experiencing it for the first time," said Mosothwane.

Mosothwane revealed that they have not found the mother of the baby and are still investigating to find out who could have dumped the baby. "We asked around the village to know if there was someone pregnant but we have not found anyone with a missing baby."

He appealed to the public to assist them with information relating to someone who was expecting but with a missing baby, so they could locate the mother of the missing baby. "We hope someone will come forward with this information."
