Uganda: Father Held Over Girl's Rape

Masaka — AS the father, he is supposed to be the protector of his daughter, but a Masaka man is under police custody for allegedly raping his 18-year old girl.

The girl (names withheld), a secondary school student reported her father Herman Kitaka, a resident of Kyegaluuso Village in Butenga sub-county to Bukomansimbi police last week. She claims the father returned home drunk late in the evening, found her seated on the bed reading a book, and forcefully had sex with her.

She said she reported the incident to her maternal uncle who lives near their home.

Mr Kitaka reportedly told the girl he would kill her if she let anybody know about whatever had occurred.

However, Mr Kitaka told Daily Monitor at the police station that he never raped the girl.

"How could I rape her inside the same house where I have a wife?" he wondered.

"It is my brother-in-law cooking up this story. I returned home and noticed that my daughter had been sleeping with a young man in the house," he added. "So out of anger I slapped her twice on the ear and she ran to my brother in law. Now they have come up with this story."

According to District Police Commander, Stephen Tanui, a doctor's report has confirmed that the girl was raped. Mr Tanui said contrary to his claims, Mr Kitaka has no wife in the house.

Daily Monitor learnt that at the time of the incident, Mr Kitaka had been living with only his daughter, his wife having left several months earlier. "In fact she is sick and staying with her brother to whom the girl ran after the [alleged] rape," Mr Tanui said.

Daily Monitor could not easily establish why Mr Kitaka's wife left the home but Mr Tanui said the couple had had marital disagreements.
