Harare

Harare Metropolitan Governor and Resident Minister Cde David Karimanzira yesterday handed over 250 drip irrigation kits in Tafara which were donated by a non-governmental organisation.

Adventist Development and Relief Agency Zimbabwe, an organisation which was established by the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1956, sourced the irrigation kits.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Cde Karimanzira hailed the partnership between the Harare City Council and the organisation saying it had contributed to great strides being achieved in the development of women.

Cde Karimanzira said the kind of gesture extended by the organisation would go a long way in promoting both urban and peri-urban agriculture.

He commended the organisation for embarking on various community projects and called on other organisations to follow suit.

Cde Karimanzira said such projects should be spread to other areas in Harare.

In Harare, the organisation operates in Mabvuku and Tafara. It also has projects throughout the country.

Its country director, Ms Sylvia Jiyane said her organisation has also ventured into blondal sweet potato growing and processing for the betterment of the country.

Blondal sweet potato is a special variety whose leaves can be cooked and eaten as relish while the tubers can be dried and ground into flour or into juice.

She said the sweet potato could also be cooked into fresh chips among other things.

Ms Jiyane said the drip irrigation kits were meant to benefit people like orphans and the elderly among other vulnerable groups irrespective of their religious background.

She added that her organisation was involved in agriculture and food security, water and sanitation, education and economic development among other things.

The organisation's trainers, who include community service officers from City of Harare who are based at community centres, have so far trained 1 025 women and men in nutrition, gardening, positive living, marketing and blondal sweet potato processing.
