The following is a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

The United Nations has once again echoed, not on its own per se but through a proxy, an outdated allegation claiming that "Eritrea is supplying arms to Somalia".

It is not at all new for the United Nations that has turned into a loudspeaker of some forces to issue such baseless allegation. It is to be recalled that in the past it made similar unfounded accusation, exposed in due course, against a number of countries including Eritrea. It is also a recent fact that the allegation made against Eritrea claiming that it had sent 2,000 troops to Somalia following the invasion came as a surprise to many.

It is obvious why resort to such unfounded allegation, which after all is not only baseless but also one that has been conclusively proven to be a crude lie, has been made at this juncture:

To justify the open invasion of Somalia in violation of international law and principles;

To cover up the vivid and shameful failure of the international community on the Somali issue;

To camouflage the destruction and chaos being witnessed in the region due to the wrong policy pursued by the US Administration; and

To create the groundwork to forcing the Somali people who did not succumb to brute force give up the struggle as a result of hunger and genocide.

Expressing resolute opposition to the on-going cheap campaign based on repeated lies and thereby serve other hidden agendas, the Government of Eritrea once again challenges its authors to reveal to the world their accusation through concrete proof both in time and place, including the alleged telephone conversations that they claim to have bugged.
