Southern Africa: SADC Tourism Ministers Meet in Victoria Falls

27 July 2007

Luanda — Tourism ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) met in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), to approve the 2007/2008 working plan and budget.

The meeting, at which Angola was represented by Hotels and Tourism deputy minister, Paulino Baptista, concluded that the 2002/2008 budget noted a reduction from Usd 1.04 million to 709,447 to be applied mainly in the promotion of tourism and payment of operational costs.

The meeting analysed study reports on the Retosa (SADC regional tourism organisation), the region's strategy in organising the 2010 World Cup, taking place in South Africa and the matter related to the establishment of Univisa (unique visa for tourists that travel within the region and visa exemption for SADC tourists).

As to the region's strategy to host the World Cup, the member states were notified to submit their proposals on how they can participate and benefit from the event.

The Angolan delegation's proposal on hosting the 2010 African Nations Soccer Cup will be included in this package.

Concerining Univisa, participants to the meeting would not reach an exact conclusion, as member States considered as of crucial importance the holding of a multi-sectoral meeting at the highest level (Ministries of Tourism, Foreign and Home Affairs) for a common stand about the issue, since it is a transversal matter.
