The Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia has launched an endowment fund under the Danish Project for victims of gender based violence.
AFELL recently secured a US$1.2M grant from the Danish government through the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) to provide capacity building and institutional support to AFELL in its advocacy role and the handling of gender-based violence cases through the judicial system.
The fund will also cover other vulnerable persons and emerging institutions.
AFELL, in press release said, the purpose of the fund is to facilitate speedy and effective rehabilitation and protection of victims and survivors of gender based violence. It will another others provide medical support, counseling and safe haven for the healing process.
The fund will cover educational expenses based on needs. A three member Board of Directors will manage the fund.
Selection of victims will be determined by proof indigence, medical reports, and referrals from AFELL Legal Aid Clinic together with case study of the problem and school documentation for persons needing educational assistance.
The board is chaired by Sis. Mary Lauren Brown, President of the Stella Maries Polytechnic University and includes George Wallace, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Hester Katakaw, Superintendent of the Monrovia Consolidated School System.
