Eritrea: Micro-Dam Under Construction in Elabered Sub-Zone

Hamedey

A micro-dam with a capacity of holding 70,000 cubic meters is under construction in Hamedey, Elabered sub-zone. The task is being undertaken in collaboration with the Anseba regional administration and partners. Previously, the inhabitants of the area used to travel 3 to 6 hours to fetch water. Hamedey with a population of over 800 is located 20 km. north of Elabered.

Similarly, 90% of the construction of Debresina micro-dam with a capacity of holding 50, 000 cubic meters has been finalized. Besides, supply of potable water, it is expected to facilitate irrigation farming in the area.

In a related report, 4 micro-dams and 2 embankments have been constructed and one embankment repaired at a cost of 12.7 million Nakfa in the Central region. The micro-dams are located in Adi-Bidel, Tselot, Aderada, Adi-Kontsi and Adi-Yakob, while in Adi-Keyih, Zigib and Adi-Kontsi embankments have been constructed and repaired.

Reports indicated that apart from alleviating the problem of potable water supply the new facilities in the aforementioned villages would facilitate irrigation farming on 108 hectares.
