Kampala — A joint team of Ugandan and Congolese officials yesterday arrived in Bundibugyo district to investigate the arrest of four UPDF soldiers.

The UPDF Western Division Intelligence officer, Capt. Mugongo, led the Ugandan team, while Maj. Kofi Biroso led that of Congo.

A lieutenant and three privates were over the weekend captured by the Congolese forces on Lake Albert.

The UPDF spokesman in western Uganda, Lt. Tabaro Kiconco, said they were arrested while on duty at Rukwanzi Island on the Ugandan side of the lake.

Kiconco said the team yesterday interviewed a number of residents, especially the fishermen on the lake, to establish the circumstances that led to the arrest of the soldiers.

Security sources said the soldiers were initially held at Kasenyi town in Congo after which they were transferred to Bunya.

Bundibugyo authorities said the Congolese forces had been carrying out similar raids on the lake since last year.

A number of fishermen lost several tonnes of fish, fishing gear, canoes and an unspecified amount of money.
