Nairobi — An MP yesterday asked the police to arrest Health minister Charity Ngilu for raiding and releasing a suspect from a Nairobi police station.
Mr Joseph Nkaissery (Kajiado Central, Kanu), said he was shocked to hear that the minister had stormed into the police station, on Tuesday night, and released one of the handful of demonstrators, who had earlier been arrested outside Parliament.
The demonstrators included a former executive officer of Transparency International, who was protesting against plans by MPs to give themselves a staggering Sh1.4 billion golden handshake for serving for five years.
The proposals had been contained in the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment) Bill, which was put on the order paper last Thursday morning, but withdrawn in the eleventh hour in the afternoon sitting before members could start debating it.
If the Bill is passed, each of the 222 MPs will take home a average of Sh5.9 million on the eve of the forthcoming General Elections expected in December.
Said the Kanu MP, who is also the shadow Internal Security minister: "I would like the minister for Internal Security to issue a statement on a raid by a Cabinet minister of a police station and release of one of the suspects."
The Kajiado Central MP expressed fear that unless action was taken on the Health minister, her colleagues might emulate her. The assistant minister told a hushed House that the raid had left police officers manning the affected station very demoralised.
The minister for Internal Security, Mr John Michuki, was not in the debating chamber at that time, and his Public Service counterpart Moses Akaranga, said he would pass the message to him to respond next week.
Mrs Ngilu was also away at that time. She arrived 10 minute later as debate on the vote of her ministry was in progress.
A handful of her supporters gave her a foot-thumping welcome as others shied away.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker David Musila welcomed Mr Joshua Orwa Ojodeh (Ndhiwa, Narc), following his recent road accident on Kiambu road, near Runda Estate.
The Narc MP, who was using crutches, was also welcomed by his colleagues.
