Monrovia — Despite the tireless efforts of Criminal Courts "A" and "B" to speedily try rape cases in the country, the Liberian government is thinking otherwise.
Apparently not too pleased with the dispensation of rape related cases, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has called for the establishment of a "Fast Track Court" to try all rape cases in the country.
The Liberian Vice President said the issue of rape is serious, and, as such, most be given serious attention by establishing special court that will only deal with rape cases and sexual related assaults.
He spoke yesterday at programs marking the anniversary of the Liberian Council of Churches (LCC) in Monrovia.
He said: "While it is true that various courts and their presiding judges are trying to speed up rape cases, there is still more to be done. Due to other criminal cases, the rape cases take longer time to be heard and finalized."
This, he said, gets parents of victims weary of the entire process and accordingly attempt to wave their rights. Vice President Boakai said with the establishment of a Fast Track Court, the rape cases will not last longer than they are now a day.
According to him, it is shameful for Liberia which is believed to have been found on Christian Principle to engage in such deadly acts, describing it as worrying.
He has however indicated that the country cannot be endeavoring to improve its damaged infrastructures such as building more roads and schools while the value of the Liberian women is not respected.
"This is unacceptable," he stressed. The Vice President expressed hope that his recommendation will be welcomed by the three branches of government. He said the value and dignity of Liberian women must be restored under the female leadership, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
He stressed that the government will do all it can to protect their lives of women and children.
"I feel very bad and am worried about our children who are not free to play any longer because those who should have been their guidance are hunting to rape them just satisfy their sexual desire. I can promise that we will resist them in all forms."
