Kenya: Duncan Enters East Africa Safari Classic Rally

Nairobi — Former Kenya national rally champion Ian Duncan will enter a Ford Mustang in this year's Kenya Airways East African Classic Safari Rally scheduled to start in Mombasa on November 25.

Duncan's entry will no doubt cause anxiety among those looking to win this year's marathon rally. Spectator interest will also to grow with his presence.

The former Safari Rally winner will, however, have to sustain pressure and maintain the car to the end of one the longest rallies he has ever tackled.

Duncan is currently strengthening the Mustang's body-shell and other safety aspects at his workshop in Karen. Engine and transmission parts are expected to arrive from Europe.

His first Classic event in 2005 ended prematurely after an accident on the Tanzanian sector forced his Ford Escort out of the competition.

This year's Classic Rally will be held over nine days starting on November 25 from Mombasa and ending on December 3.

Co-drivers will have their names displayed on the rear windows of their rally cars from the beginning of the 2008 African Rally Championship.

The current rules have sidelined the advertising of the navigators' names while drivers' names have appeared prominently.

The 2008 African Rally Championship calendar will kick off with the Tanzanian round on February 8 to 10. It will be followed by the Safari Rally on March 14 to 16.

The rest of the events are Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally (April 25-27), Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally (May 30 - June 1), Zambia International Rally (July 18 -20), Dunlop Zimbabwe Challenge Rally (August 22-24), South Africa (October 17 to 19).

National rally navigators rely heavily on their drivers to help them win the co-drivers' titles as they prepare for the next round of the Kenya National Rally Championship in Nairobi next month.

Jessop was a lonely man in 2005 season when he won the title for the best navigator without his driver (Carl Tundo) who lost to Azar Anwar for the Drivers' crown.

It would be his wish to win the title for the second time and celebrate with Tundo who has yet to taste the feeling of lifting the prestigious title though he has come close on several occasions.

Randeep will look at Jasmeet Chana to help him clinch the Navigator title of the F2 series

Kenya Motor Sports Club will kick off the final stages with its KCB-sponsored KNRC series in September followed by Simba Union Club (October) and Mombasa (November).

The 2007 Safari Rally champion, Conrad Rautenbach of Zimbabwe, is the new African Rally Champion after winning his home round of the series.

At twenty-two, he becomes the youngest ever African Rally Champion and succeeded where his father, Billy Rautenbach, failed in his attempt to win the title in 1992 and '93 when the latter was a household name on the African Continent.
