Kaliro — Local leaders have asked the Government to aid 'viable' primary and secondary schools in the district to improve their effectiveness.

This was contained in a memorandum about the education sector, presented to the education minister, Namirembe Bitamazire, by Elijah Kagoda, the LC5 chairman, recently.

"We appreciate the job done by these institutions, but the learning environment is not conducive as many conduct lessons under trees and temporary structures.

"The schools lack instructional materials, qualified teachers and latrines," Kagoda said.

He said there are 456 latrines serving 41,279 pupils, giving a stance-pupil ratio of 1:91 against the recommended 1: 40.

Kagoda said 31 out of the 57 government-aided primary schools have boreholes on their compounds.
