Lagos — Super Eagles manager, Berti Vogts has said that estranged Mikel Obi could return to the national team starting with the Lesotho match.
He however, added that he has to merit a shirt to make his team .
Mikel has apologised to the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and pleaded for understanding and forgiveness.
Describing the suspension as 'unfortunate and avoidable, Mikel said: "I have never had any intention of disrespecting my country, the management of the NFA, the coaching staff and the players.
"If I have offended the country, the NFA, the coaching staff and the players due to this misunderstanding, I do sincerely apologise.
"I love my country and I appreciate the support of the football loving Nigerians during my troubled times. I will fly my country's flag positively at all times worldwide," Mikel stated in his handwritten letter, which was faxed to the NFA Tuesday.
Touched by his remorseful apology, Vogts said that Mikel would be invited for the Eagles next match but would not receive any special favours.
"The door is always open. We have played matches without him and Olofinjana. And Okonkwo have done well and he has to fight to get his place back. Just like there are stars in Chelsea, there are stars in Nigeria and it will not be easy for him to come back and get in the team."
