MAKERERE University Medical School has received $386,000 (about sh641m) to establish a malaria clinical trial and health research ethics centre. The money was donated by the African Malaria Network Trust.

The two-year malaria vaccine trial project will be based at Mulago Assessment Centre. Mulago III parish and the nearby areas of Kawempe Division will be the main catchment areas.

The project will prepare a multi-disciplinary team to host and conduct phase I to III of the vaccine trials.

"Malaria is one of the most dangerous killer diseases and needs special attention. If developed, the vaccine will significantly contribute to saving lives by complementing current malaria intervention measures, which focus on drug treatment and mosquito control," a statement from the trust read.

Presiding over the launch of the project at Forest Cottages in Kampala last week, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Nelson Ssewakambo, said research ethics are vital in medical trials. "They help avoid mistakes that might endanger people's lives."

"Clinical research has a potential risk of harm, and therefore sound standards of ethics must be observed. This has become prominent especially where large-scale trials conducted in developing countries are concerned," Ssewakambo added.

It is very important to conduct research while acting in the participant's best interests and respecting his or her autonomy, Ssewakambo noted.

He said several professors and students on medical trials had at times ended up in jail for undertaking ethically questionable researches.

"We created the health research ethics committee to avoid mistakes and messing up our research. It has to be done according to the good clinical practice standards."
