Uganda: Towns to Harvest Garbage Cash

Kampala — URBAN authorities will provide two skips at every designated spot to not only get revenue, but as a long-term solution to the problem of garbage countrywide.

According to Urban Tibamanya, the urban development state minister, one of the skips is meant for decomposing wastes and the other for non-decomposing garbage.

The policy will be implemented by February next year, the minister added.

"While the non-decomposing waste would be burnt at designated dumping sites, the decomposing waste will be decomposed further to serve as manure," Tibamanya said during an interview on Wednesday.

He noted that the farmers would buy the manure.

"Mbarara is accruing revenue from this garbage management scheme and farmers pay sh20,000 for a truck of manure," Tibamanya said.

The minister said leaders of 10 districts in the eastern region had been sensitised about the scheme.
