Burundi: Govt Decides to Free Sugar Trade

9 August 2007

Bujumbura — The Second Vice-Presidency has taken the hard decision of freeing the trade of sugar. This decision is taken in the wake of the unfinished talks between the government of Burundi and the International Monetary Fund.

However, before this decision is implemented the price of sugar will have to rise from700 Francs per one kilogram up to one thousand to meet the conditionality of IMF which conditioned its aid with the increase of prices of commodities of the first necessity. It is the local sugar company that is based in Moso (SOSUMO) which will fix the price.

The price and the distribution of sugar are so far controlled by the Government. The trade of sugar is the business of some high profile personalities that are selected within the ruling party.

This measure was taken to curb the smuggling of this product, but it proved to be ineffective as it was described as being opposed to the stipulations of the World Trade Organisation.
