Burundi: The IMF Decides to Delay the 34 Percent Increase in Salaries to Civil Servants

9 August 2007

Bujumbura — There will be no 34 pourcent increase in the salary of civil servant before the end of talks between the IMF and the Government of Burundi. This was announced by Peter Gakuna after he met with the Head of State. The talks between these two sides are scheduled for September.

The decision to delay is justified by the fact that the government of Burundi is unable to find the money. You look at your pocket before you go to a shop, if your pocket is full you can buy many things, if it is half full, you buy half [those] things and if it is empty, you buy nothing,â-š Mr Gakuna said. The Finance Minister, Ms Clotilde NIZIGAMA, also said that they do not know where they will find the money.

The Head of State promised a 34&percnt increase in salary after long talks with the representatives of the Confederation of Trade Unions (COSYBU) to put an end to a series of demonstrations that were already announced after the salaries of the police and the Army were increased.
