Sierra Leone: 10 Violent Election Hotspots Erupting

Freetown — Democracy Sierra Leone (DSL) Monday said there are 10 constituencies where violence may likely explode during the elections, but they wouldn't identify which ones these were.

This disclosure was made by DSL's Coordinator Serajin Rolling Kamara during a press briefing at National Democratic Institute (NDI).

He said these spots - in Pujehun, Bo, Kailahun and Kono districts - are of grave concern to every stakeholder in the electioneering process.

"This is not just about the August 11 elections but for the upcoming local councils election in 2008," Kamara said, adding that they intend to avoid any violence in the elections.

"We are concerned by the recent unhealthy developments in Pujehun, Bo and Kono districts," he stated and appealed to leaders of political parties and their members to help promote peace and non-violence in the run-up to the election.

Kamara said, "DSL is condemning violence and we are calling on every meaningful Sierra Leonean not to engage in any riotous conduct." He lauded the police for their neutrality and called on them to continue to execute their duty.
