Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki underscored that Eritrean languages symbolize the grace of diversity and unity, as well as the manifestation of our identity and existence and a potent weapon in facilitating national development and progress.
He made the statement in an opening speech today at the First National Conference on the Tigre language organized by the Ministry of Information under the theme "Uniform Use of the Tigre Language in the Media." The President underlined that language plays a crucial role in spreading information, enhancing the people's awareness and strengthening their all-round participation, promoting cultural development, and above all in strengthening elementary education in the mother tongue, among others.
Nothing that the achievements registered to-date as regards the Tigre language are significant, President Isaias stressed that there still remains a lot to be accomplished in this regard.
Also speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ali Abdu from the Ministry of Information, commended all those who made contribution to the development of the Tigre language. He went on to explain that the Ministry would do its level best to reinforce the endeavors being made to enrich the nation's languages vis-à-vis providing dynamic impetus to cultural development.
Ministers, Army commanders, regional Administrators, senior government and PFDJ officials, Chairmen of Assemblies, religious leaders and community elders, as well as some 400 regional representatives attended the opening of the conference.
Different research papers highlighting the background of the Tigre language in the media, the challenges which Dimtsi Hafash met to use correct application of the language and the problems encountered in the writing and reading of this language are being presented at the two-day conference.
