Ghana: VRA, We Are Also Pleased to

13 August 2007

editorial

If the quote below from a statement issued by the Volta River Authority (VRA) last weekend is not music to the ears of every Ghanaian, then nothing else can ever be. Please read:

"We wish to confirm that we are beginning to realize the benefits of the emergency generation and other measures put in place to resolve the power supply deficit and therefore have been supplying power to customers during the day.

During our last press briefing on July 25, 2007, we noted that significant injection of new emergency generation plants will become operational in Tema. We are pleased to inform the general public that we are also beginning to receive power from our Ivorian partners to augment our supply capability."

The statement disclosed that a 20 MW of capacity located in Kumasi, the 80MW Mines Reserve Plant located in Tema and another 25MW in Tema, a 126 MW thermal plant also located in Tema and the 125MW Osagyefo Power Barge located at Effasu-Mangyee in the Western Region will all kick in somewhere along the line between now and the end of year.

We will also venture to add the almost 200MW that would be freed once the energy-saving lights project gets going. So after all the noise of the doomsayers, political hacks, energy charlatans - and well, some well-meaning Ghanaians, Ghana's "energy crisis" is being solved.

That is the short term part of it. What of the long term? Answer: Some time this week, or the next, President Kufuor will cut sod for work to commence on the Bui Hydro-electric Dam. There we are then, we hope all that politicization would cease as we forge ahead with these initiatives to move our country into the next stage of her development.

VRA, we are sure pleased too with your statement. Cheers all round then! The tipple is on ADM!

We conclude with these words from the statement: "The Authority wishes to reiterate its appeal to consumers to contribute towards managing the current energy situation by intensifying their own energy-saving measures. The savings we achieve through this mechanism can also translate into more energy available for the benefit of all consumers. We count on consumers' continuing support and understanding whilst the VRA, with the support of ECG, manages the power situation."
