Burundi: The Head of State Receives the Representatives of the UN and AU

15 August 2007

Bujumbura — President Nkurunziza received the UN secretary general and African union representatives, as well as the South African and Tanzanian ambassadors to Burundi on Tuesday, 14th of August 2007.

Their talks focused on the resumption of the negotiations between FNL and the Government of Bujumbura that stopped when the delegation of FNL went back to the bush after realizing that president Nkurunziza had no intention of honouring the promises he made to the Palipehutu-Fnl leader, Mr. Rwasa Agathon when he travelled to Tanzania on June 17.

On 13 August 2007, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms Antoinette Batumubwira, also met ambassadors accredited here in Burundi. The purpose of their meeting was not disclosed to the public, but reliable sources have revealed to Burundi Realites Agence Presse that the meeting focused on the current political crisis in Burundi as well as the resumption of peace talks involving the Government of Burundi .

Tanzania and South Africa have played major roles in brokering agreement between the warring sides in Burundi in 2003.
