South Africa: Town Finance Tracking Test in Gauteng

Johannesburg — MAYORS and senior municipal management could in future be held directly accountable for poor financial management and corruption depending on the success of financial oversight committees currently being set up.

Municipal public accounts committees, which are being tested in Gauteng, will be responsible directly to city councils, rather than to the mayor or mayoral council. This will create greater accountability by the municipal executive to the council, according to Gauteng local government MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
