Bujumbura — The price of sugar has been increased by 250 Francs per a kilo. The price was initially maintained at 750 francs by the government. This rise was decided by the SOSUMO, a local company that produces sugar on Tuesday 14 August 2007. The company indicates that the rise was caused by the devaluation of the local currency as well as the rise of the price of some products that are imported from abroad.
Although this company set the price at a 1000 Francs a kilogramme, retailers in the city of Bujumbura go up to 1200 Francs. The price of the locally produced sugar is higher than that of imported sugar from Zambia which costs less than one thousand a kilogram. The locally produced brown sugar is reported to be of higher quality.
In the recent meeting with the IMF delegation led by Peter Gakuna, the Second Vice-President of the Republic, Mr Gabriel Ntisezerana was proposed that the prices of the commodities of the first necessity should be increased to improve the finances of Burundi if the government wants to increase the salaries of civil servants.
